Hammers Call to Action

In September 2018, the Arena Essex Raceway hosted its final speedway meeting.

After 35 consecutive seasons, Thurrock lost the excitement of speedway racing, and its most popular spectator sport.

Despite national and local policies to preserve sporting facilities, the new owners of the Raceway site have no plans to include speedway, or any motorised sport, in their new housing development.

We believe the proposed development contravenes National planning regulations and existing local council policies and, on behalf of Hammers and speedway fans everywhere, we have lodged an objection to the developer’s plans with Thurrock Council.

The decision about the Raceway planning application will be made by the Councillors on the Planning Committee.

Those Councillors should represent the views of the community, meeting local needs and ensuring democratic control

The time to apply pressure is potentially very short.

A decision about the development of the Arena Essex site could be made as early as January 2020.

This is a call to action.  We urgently need your help to ensure that the Councillors are aware of the views of all those who want speedway in Thurrock.

If like us, you believe that speedway should return to the borough;

Thurrock deserves a top class sport in a top class community facility.

Our sport can be a driving force for the borough and the wider community.
